How would one go about having the speakers on to listen to music while, at
the same time, having the screen down?

I'm going to guess that "having the screen down" means not using your
monitor, i.e. just listening to music.

Use the blank screensaver. Or just turn off your monitor.

Sorry, I have no idea what you mean by "having the screen down." Please
explain.

In the properties of the Power Options tool in Control Panel, the When I
close the lid of my portable computer setting is set to Do nothing.

Start | Run | Type: powercfg.cpl | Click OK |

Not many other kinds of computers have lids. The lids also have switches
(like a refrigerator door) that can disable the machine.

When I close the lid of my portable computer...

To manually put your computer on standby
Open Power Options in Control Panel.
If you are using a portable computer, click Standby under When I close the
lid of my portable computer.

Click the Advanced tab, and then in the When I close the lid of my portable
computer list, click Do nothing.
The monitor does not turn on when you open the lid after you configure the
energy-saving settings on a Windows XP-based portable computer
