Is there any info out there on what services should (not) be running on
WinXP, in both networked and unnetworked environments.

I'd like to be able to run just a bare-bone set of services.

Thanks.

It depends on the use you make of the systems.
Search for archives of the black viper website.

Lunch was nice;
Messed up beaver muscle with apple sauce next to not cooked road runner
adenoid and vole eye conserve accentuated with gummed up duodenum inside
burnt rottweiler stomach and horned toad innards dressing, cooked in a
splashing skillet overflowing with stringy remnants of scallion and
turnip with sundry bits of unidentified floaty bits in foul-stinking
fresh blood, a side of spittlebug rectum and a litre of pus.

There isn't really a "Core" list, because of the hardware/software used.

On my own PC I prefer to run a minimal configuration that is made up
of 27 XP native services. On top of this, I have my Security software &
Acronis True Image which adds another 9 services/processes.

Trimming back XP's run environment isn't really a straightforward process
because there are system tunings and other items (SvcHost) that can be
affected.

No one single set of Service mappings would work for all users. You
just have to determine what you need and adjust accordingly.

MLK,

Visit the following site for a list of services, what they do and those
which may be safely disabled;

There are lots of Windows XP hints and tips on various websites. That
being said, I really like a little tool called SafeXP. It makes
disabling unneeded services easy. Re-enabling them if you need them is
just as easy.

Experiment with what you can terminate and what you can't.
