Linux vs. Microsoft Hosting

I've got a site (www.project2105.org) hosted by Godaddy.com and selected
Microsoft hosting option when I set up the account. I've included a search
function on the website and have loaded Front Page Extensions. The search
function has not worked ever since I first published the site on Godaddy.

I've tried reinstalling the Front Page Extensions several times and today I
republished the entire website (using FP 2003 and "FrontPage and SharePoint
Services) to the hosting account. I've also recalculated the links and
checked to make sure there are no spaces in any file names. So I finally
called Godaddy today to see if they could help me. Eventually I was told
that the search function would not work unless I used Linux hosting.

Does this make any sense? What they are saying is that Microsoft Front Page
Extensions (at least the search function) won't work with Microsoft web
hosting. The web hosting I used before Godaddy was Linux and the search
function worked okay then.

I realize that some don't think much of Godaddy web hosting but, up to now,
I've only had good luck with them.

It appears the GoDaddy has chosen not to support the search function under their Windows Servers..

I believe the search bot functionaltiy for the FP Server Extensions was
disabled in a Win 2003 environment. The recommendation was to use MS
Indexing Services. Even though the search bot used it when present, I
believe the whole search functionality was disabled in the extensions.

Interesting. How hard is it to implement search using MS Indexing Services?
Or should I just switch over to Linux?

GoDaddy hosting disables a lot of scripting. I had an issue with a PHP
script and they told me the same thing 'switch to linux'. Fortunately,
the switch process is very easy an only require one or 2 mouseclicks in
your control panel (though may take a day or 2 for files to transfer)

I'd switch to linux but that is just my preference.

Under Windows Server the FP 2002 extensions automatically switch to using Index Server. If Index
Server is not installed or enabled, then the FP search function will not work.
