Linux problems?

Anyone have any trouble trying to use Linux with a dual-core 64-bit AMD?

I've tried three different disks from magazines and have run into problems
with all three. I'm posting here just to see if anyone else had this
problem.

I'm interested in Linux just out of curiousity and don't plan to become a
hard-core user of it. So if there's not a simple fix, I'm probably not going
to pursue this problem very deeply.

Again, just wondering if anyone else had the same problem. It seems to go
through boot-up fine, and then the screen stops. I can type and hit enter,
etc. But nothing happens.

Which distros?

And a dumb question, are they 32 or 64-bit distros?

32-bit. But they should still work, right? (Just like 32-bit XP works on an
amd64.)

DSL 2.0
Also something called PlayLineX, which like the others, is a disc from a
magazine.
The third one is billed as Gnome 2.12, but I realize that's not the distro
name. It doesn't show anything else however.
The DSL and Gnome discs are supposed to be live CDs; whereas with the
Playlinex, I did a full install.

Top posting fixed (don't do that)!!!!!

To be honest, I've never heard of either DSL2.0 or PlayLineX (and Gnome
is just a window manager). Probably the best thing to do is download
and install a mature 64-bit linux distro like SUSE 10 or Fedora Core 5.
That way you should avoid problems as these have large user bases and
have been tested on an extensive range or hardware (including dual core
AMD CPUs) during the beta releases.

DSL is Damn Small Linux. You may have heard of that.

Checked the magazine that PlayLinex came with. It's made by a spanish
company, but mag says it's built on the "Debbian core."

Running Fedora Core 5 on and AMD64 X2 3800+ and an AsRock 939 Dual Sata
II. Very stable. A few teething problems since the 20 March release
date, but they are getting worked out.

I'm running 64 bit Fedora Core 4 on a 4400+. I'm also running 32 bit
FC4 and 32 bit FC5 on a couple of single core A64s.

My suggestion is that you take those magazine distros and use them for
coasters. Download Fedora Core 5 and install that. Normally I wouldn't
recommend a brand new release of Fedora Core but this one seems to be very
clean.

I have been running Linux since the early days of Slackware when Mark
Williams gave up on Coherent.

I have never had much luck with magazine versions of Linux. It is best
to download the most recent stable versions directly from their home site.

Personally, I'm a Debian fan. YMMV

Running Gentoo here, no problems with dual cores. Off hand, have you tried
Knoppix?
