Hi, Otis.

Here is an extract from an article found on ZDNet:

"Red Hat's chief executive has said that Linux needs to mature further
before home users will get a positive experience from the operating
system, saying they should choose Windows instead.
Linux is seen by Microsoft as its most dangerous competitor for desktop
operating systems, and after a number of high-profile cases where
government departments have switched from Windows to Linux-based
systems, the OS has been making some progress. However, Red Hat said
that the hype around desktop Linux is still mostly unfounded at the
moment.
Matthew Szulik, chief executive of Linux vendor Red Hat, said on Monday
that although Linux is capable of exceeding expectations for corporate
users, home users should stick with Windows: "I would say that for the
consumer market place, Windows probably continues to be the right
product line," he said. "I would argue that from the device-driver
standpoint and perhaps some of the other traditional functionality, for
that classic consumer purchaser, it is my view that (Linux) technology
needs to mature a little bit more." "

It's real. It's good. Your mileage will vary based on the applications
you want to use. Linux is an OS ... as is XP. Neither provide
significant application functionality. So when you start to compare
what you do with what you watch your friends are doing, focus not on the
OS but on the applications in use, e.g. Office vs. OpenOffice (which by
the way works on Windows XP too), Internet Explorer and Outlook Express
vs. Mozilla (which by the way works on Windows XP too), etc.

See http://linuxshop.ru/linuxbegin/win-lin-soft-en/ for an excellent
summary of Windows/Linux application "equivalents".

I use both type of computers. They both are terrific and help get the
job done.

At present, my Win XP PRO is not working at all. Been this way for
several weeks.

Fortunately, I also had Linux on my machine. It is working well and I am
learning more about it each day.

I was using Mozilla in Win, now using it in Linux.
