When downloading I have these options:
They have these options for architecture:
a.. FreeBSD/alpha Project
a.. FreeBSD/amd64 Project
a.. FreeBSD/ia64 Project
a.. FreeBSD/MIPS Project
a.. FreeBSD/pc98 Project
a.. FreeBSD/ppc Project
a.. FreeBSD/sparc64 Project
What do I pick. I have an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ but it isn't an AMD 64. Which
one is it. And is FREEBSD any good? Thank you.

One more question. With Knoppix, wince it runs of the CD, do you install it
and have to make a partition for it? Thanks

Seems like your trying to FTP FreeBSD from the project directory.
And only the pc98 looks like it would run on the machine your posting from.

I would try and download from...
http://www.linuxiso.org

It's easier to just burn the image and go from there.

Knoppix runs right from the CD no need to mess with a partition
unless you want to improve it's speed. But it works pretty fast on
every system I have tried it on.

For Knoppix to a HD see following:.
http://www.freenet.org.nz/misc/knoppix-install.html.
It is a bit "tricky", but it works. Needless to say, you need to have free
space in order to create the partition during installation.

See:
http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/HdBasedHowTo

The FAQ doesn't say that you have to create a *new* HD partition from
which to run Knoppix, although obviously it might be tidier if you did.

In fact, as I type this I am running it from my ordinary hard drive
which has a single FAT32 partition containing Windows 98SE and all my
other folders. I've followed option 1.4 in the above FAQ and simply
copied the CD Knoppix folder across to a new C:/Knoppix folder on my HD.
Then I created a new boot disk by using mkfloppy.bat in the C:/Knoppix
folder.

So far it seems to be running OK, and I can use the CD for other things now.

I burned the ISO image of Knoppix and am going to try it now. Thank you.
I Burned it in Nero Express as a bootable disc, and burned the
KNOPPIX_V3.3-2003-11-19-DE.iso onto a CD. After I said it was bootable,
it told me to format a floppy with the system files. I have XP Home and
it didn't have that option so I picked MS-DOS startup disc. I am not
sure if any of that mattered, because then it just asked for the files
so I put it on and it burned. I booted with the CD and floppy in, with
CD first in the boot order, but I heard the floppy drive then it said
like Windows Millenium and stuff and A:\> If it said D:\ couldn't I just
point it to the ISO file? Well I couldn't get it do D. I also tried it
without the floppy and it booted into XP. I then booted from my hard
drive to XP Home and burned a new CD and didn't say it was bootable. I
tried with the flopp in, and I got the same thing. I then booted without
the floppy and it went into XP. What should I do? Thank you very much.

Wrong.

Only write the ISO _a_s_ _a_n_ ISO on a CD - this file already contains
the structure of the CD-file system.

Normaly you only need to double-click the iso-file, then nero should
fire up...

Or you use the cd-tools (cdrecord) it is easy as well and you are not
GUI addicted ...

So I click on it and Nero comes up and then I burn? Do I use anything
about a bootable disk? I just dont really understand what
"Only write the ISO _a_s_ _a_n_ ISO on a CD" means. Thank you for your help.

Yeah, me too!! Help!!

Thank you. I got it to boot to the Knoppix screen, and then pressed
enter to continue. Then the screen went blank. What do I do to go past?
Thank you.

RE:knoppix, it runs from the cd,everytime,it does not change anything on your
harddrive, you can install it to your harddrive if you want.

An ISO file is not the data that goes on a CD it is more like the
instructions telling the burner how to create the data that goes on
the CD. The ISO contains (or may contain) multiple files, directories
and the structure of the disk, it is an image of the disk. If the
disk from which the image was made (or the assembly since you don't
need a disk to make an ISO) was bootable the resultant disk (made from
the image) will be bootable.

There should be an option to burn an iso file directly on CD (menu file).
If you normaly burn data-CDs you first select the files to burn. Then
the burning software creates an iso-filesystem (sometimes it asks you
about warnings while creating it) and writes this to the CD.
But the burning software should be able to write an already assembled
iso file as well.
Sorry, even if I use windows, I try not to use GUI driven programs, so I
don't need to memorize menu entries :-)

Thank you. I burned the CD right and I got it to boot to the Knoppix screen,
and then pressed enter to continue. Then the screen went blank, and I heard
my CD drive making noises. Is this a video card driverproblem or something?
What do I do to go past?
Thank you.

this is not readable.
I tried to be polite. I am sorry, if my post was agressive - my fault.

I do not want to be a part of spaghetti-posting.
I try to make my posts readable, even if it takes more time to write.
I expect others to do the same if they want to get an answer from me.
I am up to help others, but (sorry) I don't want to waste extra time to
correct the spaghetti-quoting.

Sorry, I am no native english speaker, maybe I am writing ambigious...

I was making a patition for Linux earlier today and lost everything on my
whole computer!!! Then during the format when I was reinstalling Windows, my
computer just restarted and it messed up my hard drive to where I couldn't
install Windows. Microsoft wanted $35 from me, so I ditched them and went on
another computer to westerndigital.com. I downloaded a program that "wrote
zeros" to the drive, and it fixed my problem, but took 6 hours. I finally
got Windows installed again but lost everything. I am going to try to forget
Linux forever because I am so mad and partitions suck so everyone beware of
them!!!
