which linux dist is well in my case fairly easy to use with a decent
GUI....

also whould like to know which one can be booted from cd

Simply Mepis is simply great. Picked up all my peripherals and was good to
go immediately. It is also available as a live cd so you can try it out,
then install it if you want. HTH, JG

Many of them provide a "live cd" function. I'd recommend giving Ubuntu
a whirl. A lot of peeps like it a lot. Also, you may want to poke
around http://distrowatch.com/. They've a lot of articles, an active
forum, etc for helping one to choose.

I'm guessing that Knoppix is prob still one of the best *live distros*
I am using SUSE 10.1 w/ gnome desktop and like it a lot(Installed)...you
can download free ver. of each at distrowatch......
