It reall is not worth your time. For all it is worh, get Mandrake, if
you want simple, Knoppix if you do not want to install it permantently.
Even though Lindows/Linspire is USUALLY a very easy install, it is
crippled in a way. Unless you are very good at Linux, the CNR software
is almost impossible to get rid of and if you decide to keep it, VERY
expensive over the long run.

Just my .02

It's not FREE, someone found a backdoor into the site, for download...
That doesn't make it FREE, in the same way someone finds a backdoor into
Microsoft for an XP download, that doesn't make it free either.

Not quite true because it WAS offered for free for a short time. I think the
offer is over.
I would agree with some other folks that it is not yet ready for prime
time - I have never
been able to successfully install it on a plain old PC with rather stock
parts. The hardware auto detection leaves a lot to be desired (as is the
case for many versions of Linux it seems).

This is NOT a backdoor. This is <<their>> coupon.

The instructions AGAIN>

However, it's a bit complicated.

1. Register with Inspire (free, and easy) at:

https://shop.linspire.com/shopping/shopping_cartcontents.php?addItem=Array

2. Go to a German site

http://www.pcwelt.de/news/software/39287/

3. In the 3rd paragraph click the link where it says: "If you visit
*this* order website." It shows you as having ordered the Bittorrent
ISO at $49.50

*Its the only link in the paragraph...no need to translate from German

4. Click "Apply Coupon"

5. You might get two choices -- Linspire 4.5, or BitTorrent-Only Isos or
just the BitTorrent-Only Isos

6. In either case, in the box beside the BitTorrent-Only Isos option
type lindows (lower case L)

7. Click "update". That should reduce the balance tol $0.

8. Then click "Continue".

9. Then click "checkout" and then "process order now".

10. Then click "continue" again which takes you to a page saying "Sign
up for a free trial.

11. Click "My products" on the left

12. Click "CD downloads"

13. Assuming you want to download from an ftp server rather than using
the Bittorrent program, you must now cick the line that says "Linspire
4.5 Installation CD (Bittorrent)".

14. Click "proceed with download"

That takes you to a page with two ftp ownload options, which should be
straightforward enough.

Well I said it was complicated. Good luck!>>>

Cheers!

Very true. Simply mentioned it for those who perhaps don't have
broadband or are susceptible to download limits.

Looks like we may be neighbors. You are North of Dallas?

Yes, I am.

These were actually my instructions (though thanks for reproducing them,
Son of Spy) -- and as he says it's perfectly legitimate and *not* a
backdoor.

Hi: does anyone recall the link for the free version of Linspire? Many

Just been down the same road myself. I had lots of trouble with
Linspire. It takes forever to load and configure. It is unable to
get the monitor driver loaded. In the middle of trying to get on
line, it decides to make another try at the monitor (or that's my
best guess - screen cycles through a lot of different settings then I
get the message "out of scan range" probably from the monitor's built
in software. From what it has allowed me to see of it, I don't think
it is worth the time or effort.

Knoppix, on the other hand, loaded flawlessly. It did stumble at the
monitor but comes back with a message saying it couldn't detect it and
allows me to choose the settings. I arbitrarily pick one and it is
off and running. (1994 Gateway monitor)

Loads from the CD on a 12X CDROM almost as fast as Windows does from
the hard drive on a 700 MHZ system. Once it is running, there's lots
of good software to play with.

WINE is included and you can run some windows programs that may be on
your system. Find the executable and specify it to WINE or double
click it and it starts.

If you choose Linspire and have my experience, get Knoppix before you
throw in the towel. Linspire may be doing Linux a disservice . . .
