My WRT54G will stop allowing internet access every couple of days, more or
less. We had two of these are work which were SEVERAL years older and
they did same thing. I have Vista which I doubt is issue since the older ones
at work had 95/98 and XP machines. Mine is Ver 8.0 with latest firmware
and ones at work were 3 years older and probably never had firmware updates.
My access was only physical so I could power them off and back on.

All 3 stop allowing internet access regularly and had to be powered off to
reset internet. So I think others must be having same problem?

Is the problem with both wired and wireless connections to the router?
If only with wireless have you tried changing the channel number to the low
end or the high end since you may be getting channel interference from a
neighbor?

As I said its only the Internet that does not work through the wireless router.
Channel changes do nothing to help. The router is accessible, the internet
connection to router is OK, just can't get to internet wirelessly.

Channel interference would block the wireless connection totally not just
a specific part of it.

What part of the internet are you being blocked from with wireless and what
part are you able to get through to with wireless?
And you confirm that you have no trouble getting to any location on the
internet using a wired connection to the router
Channel interference would cause a problem only when another wireless user
was trying to use the same channel so it would be an intermittent problem
from your viewpoint.

I can't get ANYWHERE on the internet, email, or nada. Any network access
other than internet is fine. The problem is a lot easier than you are trying to\
see. There probably is no solution. I just want to know if others have same
issue. After I power off and on router the internet is fine until next time.

My 54G will normally stay up and running for weeks to months at a time but
if there is any kind of electrical degradation on the line the same issue
occurs on my home wireless network. Again, just like yours, mine is cleared
by a turn-off/turn-on sequence.

The only reason I know of this is that even though it is hooked to a UPS the
UPS is not a "smart" UPS and it does allow a drop in power for a split
second. It is registered on the attached computer's UPS software but since
the power supply to the router is not the same as in the computer there is
that momentary drop in the router's power. Apparently this is enough to shut
down the connection between the router and the cable modem I have. The
wired connection to the router from the desktop in my home network also
loses internet connectivity but not data or printer sharing capability.

Since I don't have money to spend on the "smart" UPS I will live with the
issue until I go to the "N" class router that I just purchased for my "N"
capable laptop cards.

I have mine hooked to a APC BE750 which also is not a Smart UPS.
Possibly a power glitch could be it. Strange it would knock out the
internet access while leaving the other wireless functions intact.

Are you using the Keep Alive Tine option in your router and if so what is it
set to?

No and the internet is always still available, its the router that loses it.
Remember same thing happened on two other older models that I
had no access to settings on.

If the internet is still available but not through the router then the
router has potentially timed out. I suggest that you make sure you have the
latest firmware for the router and I suggest that you use the keep alive
option in the router so it will not drop its connection to the internet.

I have the WRT54G v 3 router and recently bought a new HP HDX with
windows vista x64 and had trouble staying connected to the internet. My
Dell running XP and Mac computer both stay connect without any problems.

I can confirm that Linksys WRT54G lower editions do not work with
Windows Vista. I changed numerous setting on computer and router,
downloaded firmware, driver, and tried every trick I could find posted
on forums to no avail. About 10 hours were spent with both Linksys
technical support and HP HDX technical support and Vista technical
support to fix the problem. Discovered this version is incompatable
(although it says compatable on Linksys web site) with Windows Vista.

Linksys tried to charge me $30 to talk to their "special technical
support" or $30 to get an extended warranty to try some "other things".
I ended up just using their online tech guys and was much happier with
their service/help - alas the "other things" did not work. Time was
lost but didn't have to pay more money for nothing.

Decided to leave Linksys after the ordeal and looking for a new router.
If you've tried everything including the help on this post - you are
not alone.

Sorry, I can't see the original post since you did not quote it, if it was
even in this forum.

Which computer do you have? Are the chipset drivers up to date, and are you
hardwired to the router or wireless.

I am currently using Vista to connect to a WTG54 v3 through a Linksys
WGA600N and it works fine.

I missed the start of this thread, so the following may not be relevant.

I've got an older version of this and it just came up when plugged in.

My son got a new version a couple of day ago and it did nothing at all.
Appeared totally dead except that you could get into it's setup. We
noticed that it had no network name. The older one came with a default name
(Linksys, or something like that). When we put a name in and reset it, it
came up fully functional.
