Hi, I have a cable modem Internet connection and am
running it through a Linksys BEFRS41 4-port router. My
roomates computer running windows 2000 can access the
internet via the router, but mine cannot. I have my
firwall disabled, and if I connect my computer straight
to the cable modem, I can connect to the internet. I can
ping my own computer via ipconfig, but not the router. I
cannot even "see" the router. I cannot type in the router
static IP when hooked up and access it. All of my
settings are set up to find an IP address automaticly,
and I have tried to set it up manually, with no success.
I have searched the microsoft website and have downloaded
all the latest updates, but nothing I try works!! Have
been working on this for a couple of days, and am
desperate for help! Thanking you for your help in
advance.

Is the router set to enable DHCP and assign an ip address and DNS? Also make
sure that DHCP can assign a sufficient number of ip addresses (at least
two). DO an ipconfig and make sure your adaptor has all the necessary info.
also check to make sure your roomates pc is not in the dmz, and that's why
he's connecting.

I am having the same problem on my home network. My 3 w2k machines can all see the route
and can get to the internet thru my cable modem but my XP home machine cannot ping the router
DHCP is enabled & can allow for up to 50 addresses

You have four machines, three with W2k and oneXP all connected to the same
Linksys router (I assume the model with four eithernet ports). The W2k
machines can connect to each other and the internet thru the router and
cable modem respectively. But the XP cannot. Is this correct?

Can the XP machine connect to the the three W2k boxes on the LAN side of
your network? The XP box should be able to at least ping each W2k machine.
Can the XP box ping the LAN side of the router - usually 192.168.1.1 unless
you have changed it?

Except for the ip address, all four machines' network configuration should
be identical. That is same netmask (255.255.255.0), same LAN segment
(probably 192.168.1.XXX), same DNS entries, and same default gateway. You
can use ipconfig /all to check box. I would also make sure all are in the
same workgroup although this is not absolutely necessary.

You might want to check to be sure you don't have the XP firewall activated.
Use Control Panel | Network Connections, right-click your connection and
select properties then the advanced tab. You might even remove the
connection, reboot, and then reinstall your network connection.

I'm sure the problem is with the XP config, not the router. Just have to
keep looking.
