Linksys NC100 Problems

Box134

I've used a generic D-Link NIC, installed since October, 1999.
Worked fine for the 'Net, but since it's a 10Mbps card, large computer to
computer transfers are slow.

So, I thought, I don't need anything fancy. I noticed a generic Linksys NIC
in Zellers. Since I had great success with a Linksys WAP and
wireless laptop NIC, I bought it.

First thing I noticed was; no install sheet for XP Pro, just 95, 98, and
NT4. OK, XP must have support built-in. I un-installed the D-Link, shut
down, pulled the D-Link and installed the Linksys. Booted into XP and was
expecting to see "Found new hardware...." but it didn't happen. Went to
Device Manager and a Linksys card was installed, except it had the dreaded
yellow exclamation mark. The error message was the card couldn't find enough
resources, only since it wasn't working you couldn't see what resources were
lacking. Perfect!

Tried re-installing using the NT install on the floppy, no luck. Downloaded
drivers from the web, same as floppy. OK, back in goes the D-Link, system
restore and everything is hunky-dory again.

I searched the web and found it wasn't really a Linksys card but something
from Network Everywhere. I also found lots of people who took it back to
Wal-Mart or wherever.

What did I do wrong? Was my mistake buying computer equipment from Zellers
or isn't that the way to swap a NIC?

My only guess is that I should have uninstalled the network before swapping
NICs. Any suggestions?

You idiot. Why don't you try the "sissy" method and install the new network
adapter in an empty slot before you remove the old one?

I have the same NIC and had to download a different
driver. It is an XP certified driver.

Here's the address:
http://www.admtek.com.tw/index/index/Download.htm

Here's the driver link/file that you want:
983B_drv_2.05.zip

As you see the date on it is 4/17/2003...pretty new!

Real quick...Linksys doesn't support this NIC anymore,
even though their name is on the box.

Thanks for the tip. I did get it to install by leaving the D-Link card in
and putting the Linksys into an empty PCI slot. This way XP detected the
Linksys and installed it without any hassle. I plugged the network cable
into the new card, ran the connection wizard, and got a working connection.
As a last step I uninstalled the D-Link card.

I will install the updated drivers from your link. How did you find out
about this? I looked high and low on the web and couldn't find anything.

I've had this network card for 2 years. I don't remember
how I found it. Maybe I just searched forever. HaHa.

All kidding aside. I had to uninstall XP because it
wouldn't work. Now that'll motivate a person. It took a
while, but I found it. Then it took about 9 hrs. to
reinstall XP, all the software, drivers, etc.

DETERMINATION!

No problem, anytime.

Well, you have more determination than I do, I would have bought a new card
first. Anyway, it was a no-brainer when I left the old card in place while
installing the Linksys. I could have had the same results if I had unbound
the network protocols from the D-Link before un-installing it. Leaving the
protocols in place and just removing the card seems to create some type of
block to installing the new card.

Since I dual boot I went through the same thing for Win98. Now that was a
PITA. Win98 had no built-in drivers and the install routines just didn't
work right. Anyway, I did manage to succeed in the end.
