Hi. I recently ran Windows Update on a laptop that hadn't had any of the
critical updates installed in over 3 years. After several nights of
installing over 150 updates I encountered a problem with IE.

When clicking on a link, but not all links, nothing happens and on bottom
bar on left side (where you would normally see 'Done') it says 'Error on
page'. There isn't a website that I have been on where this doesn't occur.

Any help would be appriciated.

Thanks,
Chris

IE6 - XP home

All kinds of links. Nothing specific. If it helps I can list some of them.

Let's see....

'Empty' in my email next to BULK folder but not the 'Empty' next to TRASH
folder

'Click to enlarge' it was obviously a pic. don't remeber which site.

While reading an article on CNN.com a line in the article "...to see the
diff between the two, click here." The word 'here' was a link to a pic.
Didn't work.

"Contact Us' link on the bottom of a site that I don't recall.

'Add To Cart' on another site. Maybe amazon or bestbuy or buy.com not sure
which.

If you disable all Add-ons (Tools > Manage add-ons) or boot into Safe Mode
with Networking, does this behavior persist?

What anti-virus, anti-spyware, and/or third-party firewall applications are
installed?

Manage add-ons is grayed out. Can't click on it. Haven't tried booting in
safe mode.

Anti-virus is Norton. No anti-spy. No third-party firewall. Firewall is
microsoft.

Nice! I don't know what I was doing last night, but I went into Manage
Add-ons and started disabling them one by one. After the second one I
disabled the problem was gone.

It's weird though, that add-on was there before I ran all the updates.

Anyway, thanks PA!

And the problematic Add-on was...?

Yep, MyWebSearch. You have it on your comp?

H*** no!

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Hey Bear, can u direct me to the proper forum for another problem I'm having?
Give me the link for my prob?

Trying to install dial-up software on my laptop. I have dsl on home pc and
laptop, but want to install dial-up on laptop for when laptop is outside my
house.

Keep getting that error message, you know the one, Microsoft has encountered
an error, then u have option of reporting it to Microsoft or not. Then
program shuts down. I think its a conflict but dont know what to do, or where
to go.

Can u send a link for proper forum on Microsoft site?

Thanks Bear.

Ask your question a new thread in WinXP General newsgroup, Thad. In your
first post, explain why you have to install any software whatsoever in order
to use the dial-up connection.

I don't understand why you would need to install any software in order to
set up a dialup connection. WinXP contains all the software I've ever
needed except maybe the modem driver/
