Links to files in other directories - problems copying files

Mike

I have a set of Excel files acting as databases with another set
reporting from the data, spread across several subdirectories. When I
copy the files from my development PC to a networked PC with exactly the
same directory structure on a network drive, the links all have a
profile path inserted (the path to XLStart). This stuffs up the
reporting files by producing incorrect paths, but also lengthens
formulae past the Excel limit, so that I can't edit the links on the
networked PC.

Can anyone explain why this is happening, and advise how to stop it?

Excel 2000 / 2002, WinXP

Dave, it's too late to change link source, because in many files the
formulae are too long once the system has inserted the path to XLStart.
Besides, that's incredibly time consuming, having to unhide and
unprotect all sheets and then do the reverse after changing source.

The files have been uploaded by various means, including FTP and CD,
mostly zipped, but we have tried a couple unzipped.

Sorry Dave - on my PC, Change Source won't change protected cells. And
these are not small spreadsheets - I'm doing one now and it's been 5
mins and still counting ... I've had to do this many times over the
past few days, and I'm very well aware of how long it takes, even on a
2.4GHz PC.

Having said that, the fact that this problem occurs at all means that
there's a far quicker way to change these links, without using Excel to
do it. Perhaps someone can enlighten us on this one as well?

Well, who would have thought of that! That does explain how it
occurred, and how to prevent it. Many thanks, Dave.
