Links bar missing, other weird errors

My internet explorer 6 has experienced a variety of
strange errors over the last year. Recently I had the
problem (which I've seen reported elsewhere) that
prevented me from having two windows open at the same
time. Open a new one and the old one closed. Well I got
that to stop by doing the sfc. However, my new problem is
a REAL irritant.

Whether checking the box or not, and whether all toolbars
are checked or not, the Links toolbar will not show up on
my window. Furthermore, the windows update site won't
display properly in my browser.

Like I say, I've done SFC. I've run ad-aware, virus scan.
Have had norton internet security running for a long
time. It's an XP Pro HP laptop, and the problem persists
after having installed SP2.

Anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks!

Have you tried un-locking the toolbars and seeing if you can locate/drag the
links toolbutton into location? How about checking if there is a restriction
to IE and that Links button? See here:
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/537/

If there is a restriction and you must edit the registry, be sure to make a
back-up first. Also, select the Registry Key, and export it to some location
where you can retrieve it should that prove necessary. Always follow safe
procedures when in the Registry. Errors can be very dangerous to the
"health" of the PC.

As far as the WU page not displaying properly; make sure you have Active
Scripting enabled. Better still, after you do that, add WU to your trusted
sites zone. Then again, disable or prompt Active Scripting. That will be
accessed via Control panel>IE Options>Security Tab>Internet zone>Custom
level> Active Scripting. You'll also notice Trusted sites when you are on
the Security tab. That's where you will go to enter WU into it.

Thanks for answering Lucky Strike. I should've been more
clear about the steps I've taken. Please understand, I am
no novice user, so basic steps such as making sure the
links bar is not simply bunched in a corner were taken,
as well as any basic troubleshooting steps. I've also
done every possible repair/reinstall option, to the
extend MS lets you do that with IE.

Ive already had odd behavior before. I know I've got a
corrupt file somewhere but can't find out how to find it
or replace it. Microsoft ridiculously gives away
something for free then provides NO method of finding out
what's wrong with it when it's broken. Trying to describe
the issues or solve them via this group is frustrating.

Anyway, I appreciate you taking the time to reply. I'm
afraid I have a much more serious problem than a registry
key that has corrupted my links bar, and the windows
update problem is a big one too. Suffice it to say that
with every possible permission added there is no luck,
and I had never changed the settings before in order to
bring about the problem in the first place.

I suppose I've either got a virus that Norton isn't
detecting, spyware/adware/malware that my various
prevention and detection programs aren't recognizing, or
a corrupt file in the IE installation. Since Microsoft
won't permit you to reinstall or fix Internet Explorer in
any meaningful way, once it is broken it's basically
broken forever. Great design guys.

You can try these MSKB articles and see if you can get IE
