Hi there,
I have several dependent workbook linked to a source
workbook, if there are changes (insert/deleting rows or
columns) in the source WB, the dependent WB changes only
if it is also open at the same time.

If we make changes to the source WB when the dependent WB
is closed, it does not update with the new reference
automatically. When you later open the dependent WB, even
if the Update Remote Reference check box is on, it does
not update the link.

I think this used to happen automatically earlier in my
sheet.
Any suggestions how to get it back to work.

Many thanks

No it didn't. Your memory is being obscured by wishful thinking.

Nothing to get back. Excel *NEVER* automatically adjusted external link
references for changes made in linked files while the file containing the links
was closed.

You could use defined names in the workbooks that contain the data, then use
references to those defined names rather than explicit range references in your
external links.
