linking workbooks

i want to have a master file which reads info from 12
separate monthly files. these files will be created by
importing .prn files from another program & saving them
as .xls

problem is, how to do the references in the master file.
if i create dummy files for each month the references
work fine of course, but then when i overwrite the dummy
files via 'save as' when i have actual data the formulas
in the master file become invalid.

i could just copy and paste every month but it seems as
though there ought to be a simple way to work this.

any ideas will be much appreciated. thx in advance.
 
Do you necessarily need to save your .prn as .xls? You could just pull data
from the 12 monthly .prn files using Data -> Import External Data -> Import
Data... and select your .prn. Create new sheets for each .prn in your
master file and refresh whenever new data is available...?

Or did I misunderstand what you're trying to accomplish?
