I now have a document of 550 pages (I haven't inserted page numbers yet
because if I insert them, I don't know how to delete them if I need to) The
first 8 pages are the table of contents. How do I link the Headings and Sub
Headings in the Table of Contents to the text further on in the document so
the reader doesn't have to scroll down. For example, if I click in the table
of contents on "English in the United States" it will go to page 27 or if I
click "Glossary" it'll go to page 525?

Hi Bill,

If you created your document using Word's heading Styles, it's as easy as
Insert|Field:Index and Tables:TOC and choosing the "\h" switch.

As for the page numbering, simply insert a page numbering field into the
document header or footer. By default, all pages will then be numbered. You
can exclude your TOC from the page numbering by placing a section break
after it and setting the next section's page numbering to start at '1'.

Hello Macropod,

You can tell I'm new at this. I didn't use Word's headings because Heading
1 was toooo bit, sth like 24 and heading 2 was 18 or something. How can I
make Heading 1 into 14 pt. instead of 24 or Heading 2 into 12 and Heading 3
into 10 pt size or whatever. So, I formatted all the major headings (which
are actually chapters) with Style 1 which I made 14 pts., centered, bold etc.
I haven't gone through the 180 sub headings yet. Under Insert--Field
there is nothing called Index and Tables, there is one called Index. I
don't know what an \h switch is, where it is or what I do with it. When you
use TOC are you referring to my own Table of Contents or the TOC under
Fields? As for page numbers, you suggest excluding the table of contents
and beginning with the actual info, in my case the Introduction but shouldn't
the table of contents be numbered from 1-8 and the rest from 1 -542?

Hi Bill,

To reformat the Heading, use Format|Style|Modify, instead of
Format|Paragraph. For the style, you'll see most of the options that are
available from the formatting toolbar.

The difference with Style formatting is that it affects everything in your
document based on that style. So, if you apply the Heading1 style to all
headings at a particular level in your document, then change that style's
format, all of the headings will be updated.

For more information on how to create a TOC, see:
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html

You should be able to access the fields for inserting the TOC via:
.. Insert|Field (Word 2000 has an 'Index and Tables' category that lists the
TOC fieldname, or you could access it via the 'All' category) or
.. Insert|Index and Tables, then click on the 'Table of Contents' tab.
The '\h' switch, available via Insert|Field, enables hyperlinking from the
TOC to the heading (and back).

As for the page numbering, you might have the section with the TOC numbered
from i-viii and the rest from 1 -542. Or you might leave the TOC pages
un-numbered. Either way, you'll need to use a section break and start the
second section's page numbering (eg via Insert|Page Number|Format|Start At)
at 1.

Cheers
