I have Windows 2000 Professional and have a substantial
PowerPoint presentation (256 slides) that i need to link
to an .exe file. (We have permission to use it in our
seminars) I can establish the link to run the animation
file and save it but the minute i close the file - not
move it or anything but just close it - the link breaks.
The instructors need to be able to access this animation
from any slide in the presentation. I have linked it to a
button on the Master Slide and placed the presentation and
the .exe in the same folder. Does anyone know why i can
establish the link but not retain it? Please help!!!

Thank you,
Barbara

Your best bet is to make sure your link is in the same folder as the
presentation. I believe PowerPoint assumes that the link is in the same
folder. Perhaps your PowerPoint is resetting the link upon saving.

.
It is in the same folder now. I have tried as hyperlink,
Run program....anything i can think of. It runs
beautifully when first linked. The minute i close
PowerPoint and re-open i get the 'Unable to Locate File'
warning! This is an integral part of our seminar and it
is really urgent that i find out how to make this linke
remain active. Any other input is most welcome!

Thank you,
Barbara

Can you give us a bit more detail?

Specifically, when you say the link breaks, do you mean that it points to the
wrong location or just ceases to work for some other reason? In other words,
when you re-open the PPT, rightclick the button and look at Action Settings or
Hyperlinks, what does it say?

Note that there's a limited amount of storage space allocated for link info.
If there are a lot of other links in the presentation, you may have just hit
the limit with this link, so it might refuse to work for that reason.

Also, as a rule it's not enough to put the linked file in the same folder as
the presentation after the fact. They have to be together *at the time you
create the link* or the link path is absolute and won't work when you move the
presentation.

How are you reopening the file? If you're choosing the file from the "Most
Recently Used" list on the File menu, don't.

Try any other method of opening the file: File, Open or doubleclicking the
file's icon or dragging the file atop PPT or the PPT icon .... whatever.

See if that makes a difference.

Yeah, I know it sounds like a wild stab in the dark, but it's not. Trust me.
