just getting started with this and very rusty on Access!

I want to be sure that nothing in the active accounting
files I'll be linking to can be changed but need to be
able to use the data in "complicated" queries, etc. I've
read the help files relating to this and gather that by
default - access will let you edit the actual data -
which i don't want. One method is to set (thru windows
explr) the folder/file properties to "read-only" but
won't this cause problems with the accounting programs
use of it's file?

Also - help discusses opening the Access database as read-
only...1) i can't get to an "open dialog box" to choose
this option..just "open".....2) does read only opening of
a db prevent you from making any changes at all to the
sturcture of querys and reports?

ANY suggestions are appreciated!

Hopefully you're not trying to update the queries directly, but you're using
a form. In that case, set the form's properties not to allow update.

As opening as read-only, that will only affect the MDB you're opening.
Assuming your data is in another MDB (or, more likely, some other file
format), it won't impact that at all. But yes, if you open a database as
read-only, you cannot make any changes to queries, reports, etc.

Thanks Doug!

The queries I'll be doing are for making
calculations/creating calculated fields for some forms
and more reports. The only updates would be for non-
linked additional data tables. I know I should be ok if I
stay away from opening the tables themselves...just
looking for ways to make it fool-proof as I tend to
utilize datasheet view (queries) more than forms (gotta
change that!)

Thanks again for your reply.
