Does anybody know how to link to a secured database. I'm
trying to link from an unsecured database to a table in
one that is secured, I get "you don't have the necessary
permissions" box. Is there a trick to overcome it? Gabe

You need to start the unsecured database using the same workgroup that
is securing the secured database. The user need to have security to open
the second database. You can't sneak into a secured Access database by
using a link.

I suggest reading
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];207793

Access security is a great feature, but it is, by nature a complex product
with a very steep learning curve. Properly used it offers very safe
versatile protection and control. However a simple mistake can lock
everyone including God out.

Thanks for the tip and website! I modified my shortcut
to specify the user group and open the unsecured database
that way. Is that how you had in mind? I still can't
get a login window or permission to link. Is there
another way to direct the database to the workgroup?

I am not exactly sure what you are asking. However let me guess. I
believe you must connect to the workgroup BEFORE you open the database so it
knows who you are and what authorities you have as it opens. If I have it
straight every time the program starts it opens a workgroup. If you don't
direct it to one, it opens a default workgroup on the local machine.

Joe,
When I created my secured database using the wizard it
suggested I opt for a shortcut to be placed on my desktop
to specify the user group created at the time (otherwise
it has been my experience access will make that new user
group the default user group for every database) The
properties of the shortcut specify the path to the file
and usergroup. What I did after I read your message was
creat a shortcut for the unsecured database and specify it
also open the same usergroup as the secured database I'm
trying to link to. This is the only way I know to direct
a database to a user group. My question to you was did you
have in mind another way of doing it especially since I'm
not having much luck with my method. Thanks again, I hope
this is clearer.

When you open an unsecured database you are doing so using the default
system.mdw workgroup and you are silently logged in as the user 'Admin'
(which is a member of the Users Group). If you want to be able to link to a
secured mdb, then I'd suggest you open the secured mdb and grant open
permissions on the database and read permissions on the table.

Hi Gabe,

I'm not sure what you really want. But if you just need to this a single
time you can try to open the secured database so that you get the database
window (no autostart). Then close the database window. Then open the
unsecured database. Now try to link. The other option is that you will have
to start the unsecured database with a shortcut where you tell MSAccess the
location of the SYSTEM.MDW of the secured database and then try to link.

Sid.
