I am using chart captions to reference illustrations relative to chapters. I
also refer to those charts in the body of my text. Is there a way to link
these references so that if the name or chapter number of the chart caption
changes, it will also be updated in the body of my text?

Yes, I believe I have already done that. The heading numbers are correctly
shown in my captions, which appear directly above the respective
illustration. However, I also want to refer to that illustration in the body
of my text. Example: "As you can see from Fig 3-3, the correct way to..."
then below that paragraph you will see a chart with the caption "Fig 3-3".
If I then move that chapter or paragraph to another location, I would want
both references to update.

To update the cross-references and caption numbers, you can switch to Print
Preview and then back to your favorite view.

Perhaps I'm not being clear. I understand how to update references once
those references have been created. And I have create a reference for each
Figure that I have. What I need an answer for, however, is "how do I refer
to a captioned illustration from within in the body of my text? And how do
I link the two? See my example in the previous comment. Thanks!
