Linking Pictures

I am using Powerpoint 2002 and trying to "link" pictures
(jpg and gif) from my hard drive into my slides. I want
to be able to change the pictures on my hard drive and
then the Powerpoint slides will automatically be updated
with the new pictures. But when I copy the pictures and do
a "paste special" and click the LINK option, the picture
inserts, but it is not linked (I verified this by changing
the pic with no result in ppt, plus when I go to the EDIT
menu "Links...", it is grayed out. Am I trying to do
something that is not possible?

You link pictures a little differently in PowerPoint:

Choose Insert, Picture, From File
Pick the picture you want to use
Click the little downward pointing arrow thing next to the Insert button and
click Link

PowerPoint will update the links every time you open the PPT file containing
them.

Be aware that the links will almost certainly break if you move the
presentation or the linked files. There's a free FixLinks add-in demo at
http://get.pptools.com - the free demo will set up the picture links so
they're pathless and don't break when the files are moved. No charge.

Your my hero Steve. I was pulling my hair out... tried
about every way but that one. Microsoft needs to add that
tad bit of info to their help text for PowerPoint.

It's there in the entry for Add Picture in the Help File, but it takes some
determined work to unearth it. Links to pictures are so fragile that I
suspect it's deliberately made hard to find.
