Linking Excel to PowerPoint (Office 2003)

Hello

I found numerous chats about linking Excel to PowerPoint; but I did
not run into anything specifically addressing my issue. I have about
15 Excel charts that I am linking to PowerPoint. The links work
wonderful as long as I do not change file names. However, having both
the Excel file and the PowerPoint file open and saving the Excel file
to a new name or to a new drive the PowerPoint links do not follow the
new links. When I change source for each link the charts lose all
their formatting.

I'm fairly new to PowerPoint. What am I doing wrong?

Changing the file names. The links store the original filename. When you
rename the file, the links point to a file that isnt' there any longer, so of
course they don't work.

What are you trying to accomplish by changing the file names, though?
There may be another way to the end you're after.

Thank you for your response.

Sorry for the confusion. What I meant to say is that I would like to
be able to save both files to a different drive. The file name is the
same; the path is not.

OK, that's a bit different. No worries, it's a bit hard to explain this stuff
sometimes.

If you have a link to C:\Folder A\Myfile.xls then PPT will keep looking for the
file along that path. If the original's there, it'll find it, no matter where
you move the PPT and other copies of the XLS.

But generally if it can't find the file along the link path, it'll look for it in
the same folder as the PPT itself.

So ...

Rename the folder where the XLS files were originally, or rename the files
themselves. Put the XLS files in the same folder as the PPT and open the PPT.
If Bill's smiling upon us, it should all work out.

Note: Don't start PPT then use File, [pick a numbered file at bottom of file
list]. Instead, doubleclick the PPT file icon or start PPT and use File, Open
to open the file.
