linking a Figure # to a text reference

Hi everyone.

When writing a chapter, I refer in the text to "Fig 1" or "Fig. 2", etc.
However, the actual figure # may change by the time I have finished the
manuscript as more figures may be inserted before these. I therefore would
like to avoid writing the figure # in the text which may later turn out to
be wrong. How do I make Word 2002 connect my text to whatever # that figure
finally becomes so that it corrects it automatically? Similar to what the
TOC does for chapter titles.

Thanks.

Thank you. Just what I needed. You're a gem.

Works great. Here is a harder one.

To avoid a huge document, I am keeping each of this manuscript's chapters as
a separate file. Can Word 2002 reference a figure located in another
different document-file?

Not easily, I think--possibly not at all. But someone else may know more.
