In my powerpoint presentations I like to highlight key phrases with a
specific colour. Then when I print out my handouts I replace those same key
phrases with a blank line so that the students can fill in the blanks. I
have to do this manually, which is no big deal, but, is there anyway to do
it automatically? Thanks. Tom

Another option to the one Bill D. provided is to go ahead and make the extra
slides with the blanks in them, but hide the slides so they don't show up in
your Slide Show, but you can easily print them by selecting the slides you
want printed. For example if your slides with the answers on them are
Slides 3, 6, and 9 of a 10 slide presentation, in the "Print Range" section
have PowerPoint print Slides "1-2, 4-5, 7-8, 10". This will skip the slides
you don't want them to have.

If you hang around enough you will find all sorts of clever ways to skin the
same PowerPoint cat! In the technical nature of my business, I call them
"Authorized Engineering Workarounds"! HA!

Automatic, not really.

But ...

Here's something that one of the other MVP's blew me away with.

Over the text you want the students to fill-in, make a regular rectangle.
Select a good color and give the box an outline.
Then click on Format | AutoShapes...
On the color and fill tab click on the pull down for the Fill Color and
select Background
Click the Default for new objects
Click and draw as many boxes as you want, they'll all work the same.

This will create a box so see thru the word underneath. This is a bad
solution if the students are working off the PowerPoint file itself, or you
will be editing the text (since the boxes will not move with the text).

Hope this helps,

This might be just the thing, being as how it was written for somebody who
wanted to do exactly what you're after. ;-)

I appreciate everyone's suggestions, but, I am not certain that they will
work. What I am doing is sending my powerpoint slides to Word. I then
select outline only. This strips out all the formating from the powerpoint
slides and I end up with a simple word document. I need to remove the text
from the Word document and replace it with an underline or a box. Bill's
suggestion about blank slides is a good one, but, that would probably take
as much time as editing the Word document. There must be some way to pass
something to word that I could just find/replace with a blank space or a
line or something. Thanks again. Tom.

Oh, we are in Word. I misunderstood the problem.

Just select a word you want to erase. Change the font color to the first
level of gray. Now use the highlighter tool (looks like a little exacto
knife but it is supposed to be a highlighter) and select the exact same
color of gray. Now, DOUBLE click on the Format Painter tool (little
paintbrush looking icon).

Then, until you hit Escape or click on the icon again, any word you click on
will 'disappear' and be replaced by a gray box.

Is this close enough? If you need additional ideas, you may want to contact
our friends over in the Word NG's.
