linked objects

We have a protected doc that has linked objects in the doc. Thought I knew
how to do this but guess not. When we change the linked object it doesn't
change when we bring up the protected doc. Running word 2002 HELP! TIA
 
After doing some more checking I find that all our doc's that have the
linked object no longer work. What did we do to word 2002? TIA

After checking the operation on the pc that actually contains all the files.
That machines word 2002 works properly. So what has happened to
word/office/windowsxp that causes that? HELP! TIA
