Linked files - losing links when moving files

I have made a powerpoint slideshow in which I established links with an excel
file. The links to the graphics and tables work fine (meaning that the
powerpoint file is updated with every change I make in the excel file), as
long as I don't move the files from their original location, which is on the
network drive at work.
I tried to copy both files on diskette or even copy/move them to another
drive; the powerpoint file never seems to recognize the linked excel file
and always goes searching for the excel sheet at its original location.
I have not changed the names of the files, so that cannot be the problem.
My intention is to send these files to customers, so it's important that the
links work correctly when they install the files on their PC. I don't want to
tell them to update the links manually (there's about 40 of them in the
slideshow!).
Can anyone help me and tell me how to solve this problem?
Thank you very much.

Before inserting, put the excel file in the same folder as the powerpoint
file. You can also embed the excel file into your presentation.

I would put all the files in a folder on the C:\ drive so the path will be
the same even on your customers' computers. Of course, that means you have
to create and install or copy the files to the same folder on their C
drives.

If you're building the file in "my documents" or desktop or somewhere like
that, the links will be different on other machines, because the actual link
is something like this: C:\Documents and
Settings\USERNAME\Desktop\newfolder\ or C:\Documents and
Settings\USERNAME\My Documents

The USERNAME will always be different, and that will cause problems.
