Linked Excel file field - different types on different PCs?

Have an Excel spreadsheet linked into an Access database. One of the
columns is determined to be a text field by the Access database being run on
one PC, and to be a number field by the same Access database being run on
another PC. Both XP Pro, Office 2003 with all updates, running the database
located on a share drive. Any ideas on what in the world might be causing
this inconsistent behavior, and moreover, how to fix it?

Ken, this was it exactly. One PC had TypeGuessRows = 8 and the other 25.
Synched the registry settings, and the behaviors converged. Thanks so
much!!
