Hi Scott,
In a word doc with lots of OLE linked bitmaps with manual update, the links
get corrupted when I try to update the links. I was able to duplicate this
problem easily with a test document with 300 bitmap links. I can send that
file (zipped at 450 KB) to anyone who can help.
Why ever would you use OLE to link in bitmaps? For graphics you should use
the graphic converters ( = Insert/Picture/From file, with link =
IncludePicture field). OLE has a tremendously high overhead, and there's
usually an upper limit to the number of OLE links a document can maintain. I
think you've found this limit for your machine. (And no, I certainly do NOT
want to see the files!)
I'd say:
1. Consider whether a single Word document is really the proper "container"
for 300 bitmaps, or if this shouldn't be done in a different application.
2. Use Insert/Picture/From File and not Insert/Object to link in the bitmaps
3. In the case of document corruption it's a very good idea to
- rename Normal.dot to NormalOLD.dot
- recreate the document in a new document generated from the "clean" copy
of Normal.dot Word will now generate
