I'd appreciate any reference to documents which elaborate on min/recommended
client link speed. I think I saw some MS white papers some time ago, but I
cannot find it now.

TIA,
Alex

Dunno about MSFT documents, but I can tell you from my own testing that the
minimum usable bandwidth for an RDP sesssion is a 26.4Kbps dial-up
connection. This was done with the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client with the
following configurations:

800x600 @ 16 bit with printer & drive redirection enabled
1024x768 @ 256 colors with printer & drive redirection enabled

Each increase in color depth, screen resolution, or addition redirected
local devices used about 4Kbps additional bandwidth. That being said, and
idle connection uses virtually zero bandwidth, whereas printing a large
document, or displaying flash animation can easily consume 150Kbps+ bandwidth.

More important than bandwidth (on terminal server w/ or w/o Citrix) is
connection latency, as a highly latent connection can be virtually unusable.
Latency >500mS induces delay that is significant to the end-user, whereas
latency >1000mS makes a connection too non-responsive to use. These types of
problematic connections are typically satellite or wireless.
