Link Bars

I am following Microsoft Front Page 2002, "Step by Step"
and fail to be able to set up a link bar. This is the
exact reason why I bought the book, to be able to do this
because I couldn't set it up with the Help instructions
either.

I have gone over the instructions and completed the tasks
exactly as instructed several times.

I have downloaded, and continue to download more updates
to Office and Front Page to see if it helps. So far, no
help.

Also, it is very strange that occasionaly, a few of the
files, here and there, for the tutorial site, The Garden
Co., are missing. I have made note of a few of them. I
hoped it was not significant or did not relate to my
original problem, but I am beginning to wonder.

I hope this can be remedied. Any help would be greatly
appreciated because I am trying to start a small business
on a shoestring budget.

How far do you get, and then what goes wrong?

Dear Jim,

On adding links between web pages, on Insert menu, I
click navigation, click insert web component, choose link
bars, and bar based on navigation structure, click next,
choose bar style and in orientation box choose vertical,
click finish. On link bar properties, general tab,
choose child pages under home, and select home page box,
click OK.

The Home page opens up with no link bars and the original
instructions to set up navigation here.

Mary -
Have you actually set up your website's navigation in FP? In other
words, does your complete website show in Navigation View, or just the
home page? If the latter, still in navigation view, you need to drag and
drop pages to their appropriate positions under the home page.

HTH,
Craig

Craig,

This is all using the files and the CD with Microsoft
Front Page 2002, Step by Step. The navigation and
folders reflect the hierarchy correctly as listed in the
book.

At the end of this process it still reads on the homepage:
[Edit the properties for this link bar to display
hyperlinks here]

Use View Navigation and check / create your nav
(also that your home page has the home icon in it)

Mary -

Disclaimer: I'm certainly no FP expect compared to the dozen or so folks
here who are.

That said, I've run into that problem myself and didn't understand what
was going on. My personal fix was to delete all of the pages in
navigation view (note: in the dialog box, specify to just delete them
from navigation view, NOT from the website), and then re-do it. The
second time it worked. Never figured out why. If you're just doing a
tutorial there probably aren't too many pages so this shouldn't take too
long. Let us know how you make out.

Regards,
Craig
