I am battling with a similar problem on my 1290 as is a friend. We were
advised by Epson to reload the latest drivers and connect via parallel not
USB. Worked for about a day and has failed again tonight.
Any other suggestions out there?

Having trawled the NG and found no solutions offered I tried a similar
treatment to what I did with my old Lexmark.
I opened the lid and moved the cartridges to the refill position and then
ignored them. With a saucer of warm water and a small art type, stiffish,
paint brush (an old tooth brush might work, but is a bit clumsy, or cotton
buds) gently remove the old sticky ink and fluff from around the ink park
reservoirs using very small quantities of the warm water just to soften the
ink.
Blot with kitchen roll, repark the heads and cross fingers. It seems to have
worked for me as I say and I have got my first batch of Christmas cards
printed even if a week late!
No guarantees but has worked for me at least to get these time restricted
prints out of the way.
