As soon as I Push the power button on my laptop it just
comes up with these stupid lines accross the screen and
all this fuzz that's multi coloured in the background. I
need to find out how to fix this A.S.A.P. because I need
my laptop for school and do not have the money to get it
fixed. I have a Sony Vaio Laptop with Windows Xp Home
edition and a Pentium 4. I don't have a floppy drive and
my computer didn't come with a re boot disk.

Boor...if you don't appreciate modern art, then why put it on your laptop?

Seriously...Start your computer in Safe Mode. Does the screen look alright?
Then update your video driver to the most recent version. Is the screen is
still messed up? Then you need to replace your video card.

"Then you need to replace your video card."
In other words, if you have a laptop, that will be
replacing the motherboard most likely. Does the machine
try to go into windows or does it just give the colors as
soon as you power it on? If it does try to go into
windows, then altering the video driver might help but if
it doesn't even get to the point where it will be loading
windows, then you have other problems....hardware
problems.

i had that happen to my computer, the memory (ram) is
loose the system will not get enough to start, it looks
like ur screwed, or the ram could be bad of course

I have had the same problem with my desktop. Interestingly it begain after I loaded one of the hotfix patches for windows XP. My video is only messed up in windows and works fine in everyother app..ie.. games, dos screen. I unistalled the patch and it was repaired for a time until I installed the next update. I have aNvidia 256 video card and did download the latest drivers I have attempted to reset windows but haven't had any luck as of yet. I am reinstalling windows today...keep your fingers crossed
