Are you writing about a border?

Select your range of cells.
format|cells|format|border.

Select your border from that Style box.
select your color
click on the line you want that way.

I did as suggested, but the thickest line in the style selection was still
quite thin. How can I get a thicker line?

Try ..

Draw a rectangle (autoshape) around the range of cells
(Hold down Alt key while drawing to fit exactly to the grid)

Right-click on the rectangle > Format Autoshape

In Colors and Lines tab:
---------------------------------
Under Fill Color: choose "No Fill"

Under Line:
Enter a figure in Weight: 12 (say, that's quite thick <g>)
(play around with this figure)

Click OK

Instead of a rectangle, the line "thickness" flexibility
is also available (via same steps) when you draw a line to fit

I don't understand your answer.
How do I draw a rectangle with autoshape?
What part of the rectangle do I click on to get format autoshape?

Try activate the Drawing Toolbar
via clicking View > Toolbars > Drawing

Once activated, you can draw the "rectangle", "line" etc
by clicking the icon on the toolbar and draw on the sheet

You can either right-click on the rectangle* > select Format Autoshape
or simply double-click on the rectangle* to get into the Format Autoshape
dialog
*point anywhere
