Line Spacing Changes with graphic/caption insert - 2007

Why is it when I insert a graphic (.jpg) and then a caption, the line
spacing immediately adjacent to the right or left of those items enlarges?

TIA.

If the graphic is inserted "In line with text," it will be treated as a text
character and affect line spacing accordingly (unless a fixed value for line
spacing has been specified).

Well ... I do have line spacing set to 14pt. Is that a problem in this case
and is there a workaround?

Let's back up a bit on this "insert picture" phenomona because, in my case,
it's quite problematic.

The default upon inserting a picture is "in line with text" but that will
not allow for grouping text around the insert ... it seems to have pretty
much only one text group setting and all text after the insert point is
moved down below the picture/graphic. I have paragraph settings at first
line indent, line spacing exactly 14pt, full justification, and zero before
and after spacing.

Your "in line with text" has a lot of merit inasmuch as the picture has a
particular location but I can't control the behavior of the text that I want
to surround the picture. At the old Ashton-Tate, we never used the term
"bug", we always used the term "anomoly". Is this an anomoly or do I have
more control over the "in line with text" setting than I realize?

Having you, Susan, and other MVP's hang around this newsgroup helping all of
us is appreciated beyond words. It's really neat there is somewhere to go
where you can interact with live people and get help. Thanks.

No, "In line with text" objects behave just like (large) text characters, so
if you want to position the graphic on the page you cannot use that option.

Returning to the line spacing issue, I think more information is needed...
For which text does the line spacing change?

Nice to be appreciated! :-) Thank you.

On the line spacing thing, after inserting a graphic and then a caption, the
line spacing of text immediately adjacent to the place where the caption
box, at the bottom of the graphic, and the bottom of the graphic merge.

If you play around with the text layout box setting of the graphic and
toggle between "square" and "tight" a couple of times, the problem goes away
and spacing is normal ... a kludge, but it works.

Thanks.

I cannot seem to reproduce what you are describing. Can you reproduce it in
another document?

It's intermittent and I think it has to do with the insertion settings at
the time. As I said, when you toggle text box layout settings, it usually
solves the problem.

This is no biggie, I can live with it.

The coordination of figure numbers when adding another chapter is the
current problem that I asked in another msg. Solving that would be helpful.
Otherwise, I set up a chapter with graphics and caption boxes, insert the
new doc at the end of my book, delete all the figure captions in the
inserted chapter and re-enter them to keep them in synch with preceding
chapters.

TIA.

OK. :-)
