That option is part of the driver package for your soundcard or onboard
soundchip. Sounds like you need updated drivers.

I have Line In as a recording device. I suppose it may have something to do
with what sound card you use. I have a Creative SB X-Fi.
You might try right-clicking on the recording tab page, and check Show
Disabled devices, and Show disconnected devices.

They haven't, at least not on mine. How about some specs to
get you pointed in the right direction.

Ah, hmmm, I suppose then I may be screwed. Mine is an HP dv9700 and the sound
card is not upgradable, it's integrated. Would an external sound card solve
the issue?

Well, I'm using Vista Home Premium, the audio device is: Conexant High
Definition SmartAudio 221 (that's out of the device manager)

The machine has a headphone output port, an SPDIF (?) output port and a Mic
input. The sound card is integrated.

Mic In is the same as Line In since the normal use of line is was for Mics
they just changed the name.

Actually mic inputs are a much lower level (several mVolts) than line
devices (200mV nominal). IOW plugging a mic into a line input will result
in the mic being hardly heard and plugging a line device into a mic input
will result in distorted, heavy clipping. Having said that, the labels are
getting confused since the port can sometimes be configured. So, "audio
input" can be configured for either Mic or Line Level devices. Just
remember there is a difference when you run into it.

Bob,
Right you are/
Tindog my HP laptop has as mike in and no line in connection my whitebox
desktop has both and Vista recognizes correctly what each system has.
