S A M,
If the PC is connected to the Internet through a router, many routers
provide a "Parental Control" interface that can set a time range that the PC
has Internet access. You need to check the router's interface, or
manufacturer's website for instructions.

One option is to use Windows SteadyState which you can find out more here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/sharedaccess/default.mspx

One of the features of SteadyState allows you to restrict the time each
user is logged onto the pc. Though unfortunately there is nothing to
prevent them from logging back on once they're kicked out.

If you want to restrict them to only have a certain amount of time on
the pc each day and when they can logon, then give Access Boss
(www.fspro.net/access-boss/) a look. Though it's not free, but there is
a trial version available to see if it fits your needs.

At the time you want them to stop, lock the door to the computer room.
If they continue to control you instead of you controlling them, take away
their privileges.

If you have a few minutes to figure out how to use the Group Policy
Editor you can do it from there. They can be set on a per-account
basis. Use strong account passwords and put your kids on limited
accounts so they can't change things. ANY admin account will be able to
undo anything you do.

If they can't follow the rules, I'd put the computer in the main living
area where they are constantly observed.

I they are in control now what will it be like when
they get older? Yet another case of juvenile
delinquency! :-(

Although there might be one problem, the OP didn't say if the version of
XP in question was the Home or Pro version. If it's the Home version,
then he wouldn't be able to use the Group Policy Editor as it won't
exist in XP Home.

Note the time when they start using the computer, and tell them to log
off when you fell they've been using it as long as you like.

If your kids are smart enough to disable a keylogger, only one thing
will work: Live parental supervision. Try it, sometime.

S A M,
I don't think software will help you with your problem. There are some
business software out there, but it would cost prohibitive in a Home
environment.

It then comes down to "Parental" guidance or control.

1. Disconnect and lock up router when not at home. This will not stop them
from connecting at a friends house.
2. Instead of allowance, have them pay for the internet connection. If they
do have an after school or summer job, again charge them for the internet
connection. Similar to the times in the late 60's and 70's, when parents
were installing "Pay" phones, for children's use.
3. If they are drivers, limit their driving privileges, or actually take
them away, for a period of time, or until they are 18.
4. Take away the laptops/notebooks/desktop PC use, if they are used for
school use, and there will be bad effect if they don't have them, then that
is something that they will have to learn to live without. They will have to
use pencil/pen and paper for their assignments.

We did not have these devices as we were growing up and we survived. It
might be a hard lesson for them to learn, but actions do have consequences.
Better they learn that now, then later in life.

Good point; thanks for mentioning it.
