Limited Virtual Memory...

Your system has no paging file or the paging file is too
small.

The server experiencing this error just lost a hard drive
in its RAID. We've pulled the defective drive and are
waiting for the replacement. In the meantime I'd like to
log into the system and check the data. I've booted to
the recovery console and ran chkdsk/r which repaired some
files. Each time you boot up in normal mode or safe mode
you get the error and the system recycles to a login
screen. You never reach the desktop so you can't manage
the virtual memory. Any thoughts?????????
Thanks.

Hi Sam,

You have been bit by some bug, so after this is fixed you might keep an eye on
your Event Viewer to see if becomes blank. To deal with the pagefile.sys do this:

If you cannot see "hidden" and "hidden system files", we need to change that.

Go to Start >Settings >Control Panel >Folder Options >View[tab] >
check the bullet "Show hidden files and folders" >
uncheck the next two > OK your way out. When you get through, go back and change
the files, so that someone won't inadvertently screw something up.

Do a search for pagefile.sys. Delete it. It's gonna give you ,"Too large to send
to Recycle bin, do want to delete it anyway". (Yes)

To the registry now...

Start >Run... >"type" regedt32 (enter) >click on
HKLM\CurrentControManager\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\double click
"PagingFiles... " enter numbers that are twice your RAM and OK out and close the
Registry.

Reboot (make it a cold boot)

After rebooting, go check your Virtual Memory size. Always try to use the Control
Panel to make changes like this, so to System in the Control Panel >Advanced[tab]
Performance Option[button] >change[button] >check it out (use "Cancel" all the
way out)

Use this size as a beginning point. Some people say to make the size 2.5 times the
amount of RAM. Depending your machine. W2K recommends a minimum of 128megs of RaM,
but it barely gets by with 256meg. Most everyone I know has 512 or more. On this
box, I have 2,000meg of PC2700/333 (DDR). Oh your limits on Virtual Memory are:
mnimum of RAM+32megs and the Maximum is 4,092 megs.

Don't forget to go change your files back.

good computing,
