I recently updated to XP Home and set my kids up as a
Limited users and myself as Administrator. As Limited
users, however, they are not able to log on to AOL. The
error message reads "Your MAIN.IDX file is damaged".
When I change the accounts to Administrator they can log
in fine. What do I need to do to enable access to AOL
for Limited users?

Thank you,

Jenny

You really should be asking AOL tech support about this. They tested their
software to work with Windows XP and are aware of the user accounts that XP
uses. Most XP aware programs ask during setup if you are installing for
everyone or just yourself. At that point answering "everyone" will make the
software available to limited users or any other XP user account.

If you installed software for the AOL account, you need to install it in
your children's account as well.

Most applications weren't designed for this type of multi-user environment.
Such applications need to be installed in each specific user's account to
whom you wish to grant access.

First, be sure the account to which you wish to grant access is set to
administrator and not limited. Install the applications to the same folder
in which it was originally installed. This will look the same as one
install on your hard drive but create the pointers necessary for this user
to have access to the application.

Once the installation is complete, you can return the account to its limited
status if that is what you want and the user should still have access.

Thank you for your answers. I did ask AOL first. They
said it sounded like a Microsoft problem. Then, after I
was done pulling my hair out, I downloaded the latest
version of AOL, 9.0. It fixed the problem. I hope AOL
sends me a survey for the online help session I had for
this problem. I'll defintely be returning it.

You're welcome. Guess we should have asked about what version you were
using.:-)
