I have set up windows xp home with 4 usaers. 2 with admin
auth. and 2 with limited. Programs installed by me as
admin auth. can not be opened on the users desktop. The
icon is there but it won't open and run. The program says
it is compatable with xp. I also have sbc dsl internet
and the same problem. I set up 4 diffirent users on dsl,
the icon shows on the desktop of the users but it won't
run. I have to log on to my desktop, the pop-up with all
4 names show,s and they can get in that way. This is
crazy, the limited users should be able to use programs
installed and acess these from their desktop without me
having to log on my desktop for them to use. HELP

Hi Rick,

Right-click the icons, use "run as" where you can, you will enter an admin
name and password. This may also help:

If you moved the icons out of your admin profile that you used to do the
installation and into the All Users Desktop folder, the permissions are
wrong and too restrictive for limited accounts to use.

Either change the permissions on the shortcuts to inherit the parent
permissions (from safe mode so you can see the security tab) or else
move them back to the original location and then cut/paste to the All
Users profile so that the shortcuts inherit the appropriate permissions.

Be sure you understand exactly what "move" and "cut/paste" mean. The
permissions are different depending on which method you use. If you
"move" a shortcut (drag), it keeps its permissions. If you "cut/paste" a
shortcut it inherits its permissions, so always "cut/paste" shortcuts
into the All Users profile.
