One week ago all 4 profiles on my XP Home computer could
access the internet thru IE and AOL. Starting on Saturday
only the administrator profile could. The other three
limited profiles could not. I changed one of the limited
profiles to administrator and it could then surf. Changed
it back to limited and the problem came back.

The network: DSL -> Dlink router -> ethernet nic in
a "powerful" computer with a fast processor and lots of
ram. It WAS WORKING for many months then mysteriously
quit. 4 members of this family use this computer, so no
telling who did what when.

Tried Network trouble shooter, which was a pain, at one
stage. From the limited account I was able to open a dos
box and ping to the internet but neither IE nor AOL would
connect.

you may have some options to fix this issue. clean these profile internet
temp folder. or simply copy the administrator profile (make sure no data on
the profiles).

works, changed this user to limited, doesn't work.

did not see anything on chicagotech that helps with this
issue.

other ideas?

Robere,
My computer has done exactly the same, much to the
frustration of my children on limited accounts and to me
who has to try and troubleshoot the problem!
I'm guessing that one of the automatic updates for
windows XP has a bug as the problem seemed to arise at
about the same time.
Below is the history of the updates. I am interested to
know if you have the same recent updates to your computer?
You can find your updates by going to
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp and
selecting the view installation history from the other
options.
I have two other messages in these forums. I will
forward any replies to you if I get any (none since
posting yesterday).
Regards,
Graeme

I'll check when I get home tonight, but in the meantime,
yes, I have tried to keep up with all the security patches.

Robere,
Explorer started working again for me on all accounts!
It happened after I reset the ADSL router when I had to
move the computer. I had made an update to Norton
Antivirus at about the same time so maybe there was a
block from this software?? Who knows. If it happens
again I will reset the router as a first step. Hope this
works for you.

Graeme

Any update on this?

I have two accounts in XP. The Administrator can connect
to the internet, the Guest account can't. I've tried
sharing the modem connections but the Guest account can't
access them.

I have the exact same problem, using a cable modem and a router... Has anyone found "the answer" to this

Seems there are a lot of people having this problem and no good answers out there. Months ago I was able to access the Internet from both users on the same machine using IE. One account was admin the other was limited -- didn't matter -- both had access. Somewhere along the way, the user who logs on first is the only one who can access the Net via IE. I've searched and searched -- but no quick fix. Hence, I loaded Netscape -- and now both can access the Net [but only the first person to log on can be the one using IE!!!]. Go Microsoft!!!!
