Limit number of messages downloaded

I am working with a very slow network connection. I have configured the
users' outlook to download message headers only, but this (in addition to
contacts and calendar items) is still ~2 megs (for about 700 messages). Is
there a way to limit the number of messages downloaded. For example have
Outlook only download the last 100 messages or only the messages from within
the last month. I do not want to remove the messages from the Exchange
server for availabilty when a faster connection is avaible. Thank you for
any assistance.

What version of Outlook? In a slower network situation, Outlook 2003 in
cached Exchange mode can enhance perfomance. You can then not download from
Exchange, but leave the data on the server where it belongs.

Thanks, I am using Outloook 2003.
