I prefer to listen to them and use Winamp for that purpose.

Irfanview does sound also. There are plugins for it and you can get all the
irfanview plugins from their site.

I find irfanview fine for sound; you may need a plugin, I've had it so long
I can't remember, if you haven't got the plugins download "all plugins"

Use thumbnails (under File), and it opens your media player with the
selected file

I have several good players, but I have recently discovered
Quintessential Player at http://quinnware.com/ . It has as many features
as any, and will play anything except RealAudio. It has LOTS of easy to
install 'skins' available to make its interface easy for you, and it is
easy to edit titles, artists...etc.

If you want an ALL- in- one player, including Real Audio, JetAudio basic
is available at http://www.jetaudio.com/download/ and is almost as good
as Quintessential, except that I don't like their new look. If you can
still find a copy of JetAudio 4.81, it might be easier to deal with.
