Life on the SHIFT Lock

I have Windows XP Pro and recently It started going
wacky. When I start my computer up, it works fine for
awhile then when I click on an icon or anything to
select, it highlights a bunch of things at once. Also
when I try to type a number it's like the SHIFT is locked
only it isn't. When I try to restart it won't, so I have
to use shut down, then after I turn it back on it works
fine for awhile BEFORE it starts being wacky again. It
started doing this just after I scanned a document into
OCR and opened it in WORD as a RTF file (that may not be
relevant, however). My Windows XP is up to date and so is
my AntiVirus. Also, the problem still happens even when
I use a different keyboard.

Any suggestions?

Thank you very much!

Perhaps you have more than one keyboard language defined.

Under Text Services and Input Languages, click the DETAILS button.

The top drop down menu shows the default keyboard and the others that are
available.
Are there any that shouldn't be there ? You may be inadvertently switching
to another keyboard by hitting a hot key sequence.

Check under the key settings button to see the key sequences used.

Another thing to check is if you have any keyboard accessiblity settings
set, such as sticky keys.

control panel/accessibility options

This can lead to unexpected behaviour.

Paul,

Thank you so much for the reply! But unfortunately, the
2 suggestions did not help.

The computer works good after restarting for a while then
goes bad again.

Any suggestions anyone?

Thanks in advance!

I had very similar problem due to malfunctioning mouse.
Have you tried another mouse?
