Kinda along the lines of a previous post by Angel Soto. I have a Citirx
environment with 3 2003 servers and 3 2000 servers. I recently changed my
licensing server over to a 2003 machine and I have 200 2003 per user licenses
installed as well as 25 per device. I have all the 2003 servers set to per
user mode but looking in termincal server licensing i notice a lot of per
device temporary licenses being issued but 0 of the per user. The temporary
licenses will start to expire in about a month and I want to make sure that
there won't be any issues once that happens. Suggestions?

Also, if I have previous win 2000 TS liscenses can I also install them on
the new 2003 server? Thanks.
 
Have you checked the EventLog on your Terminal Servers?
They should not be logging any licensing events!

Also check the date that the latest temporary license was issued,
and compare this with when you changed your Terminal servers to
use the Per User licensing mode. No temporary Per Device licenses
should be issued after that date.

Tha fact that no Per User licenses are issued is in itself not a
sign that anything is wrong, because Per user licenses are
currently unmanaged, which means that the license count will not
be decremented.

But I would certainly check the EventLog regularly, until you are
completely sure that all is well.
If your clients are starting to receive warnings about their
license going to expire in xx days, then you can be sure that
something *is* wrong.

Yes, you can install W2K TS CALs on your 2003 LS, but you might
have to call the Clearinghouse to do so, since the license pack
previously has been installed on your old W2K LS.

Ok, I checked the event log and the 2000 servers are getting an event logged
stating the terminal server cannot issue a license. Event ID 1004 and the
terminal service client '%1' has provided an invalid license.

There are still temporary per client liscenses being issued. I learned that
2000 TS can only use per device liscenses and since I only have 2003 per user
liscenses installed but since they are per user I am assuming that they are
not backword compatible. Is that correct, or be causing the problem?
 
Yes, that's your problem.
If you have W2K Terminal Servers, you must have Per Device
licenses.
I'm not sure how you should proceed from here, since you have no
right to switch licenses from Per user to per Device if you don't
have Software Assurance.
If you do have SA, phone the Clearinghouse and change your
licenses to Per Device.

Thanks. We have additional 2000 liscenses but did not install them because
we figured the 2003 liscenses would be backward compatible. Did not realize
that 2000 only did per device and purchased per user liscenses. Learn
something new everyday though.
 
Ok, I called the clearinghouse to install my 2000 TS liscenses on my 2003
liscence server and they tell me that the liscenses have expired and have to
have them reissued. I didn't think that liscenses expired. I then called my
vendor who we originally bought the liscense from and they tell me it isn't
possible to even load 2000 liscenses on a 2003 liscense server. I'm at a
loss here.
 
Your vendor has no clue (which is not uncommon :-)
A 2003 TS Licensing Server can handle W2K licenses, but not the
other way around.

About the Clearinghouse: yes, since you probably have installed
those W2K TS CALs previously on a W2K LS, they have to re-issue
those TS CALs so that you can install them on your 2003 LS. That's
a normal procedure. Or is that not what you mean?

Actually, I called the clearinghouse to re-issue the CALS to load them on my
2003 LS and they tell me that the Liscenses are expired and I need the vendor
to re-issue them. I used the liscense numbers from our eOpen account and it
says the activation status is expired, which is why the clearinghouse is
telling me the vendor needs to re-issue them which seems weird to me.
 
Also, it is the vendor that is saying they can't reissue them as the SKU for
2000 TS CALS are no longer valid.
 
I've never before heard about time-limited licenses.
I'm afraid that this is between you and the vendor. I would try to
find the original agreement and read the conditions to see what it
was you actually bought, and if the vendor can be forced to give
you new licenses.

As it turns out, the company that set up our Citrix farm originally, before I
was hired, had set the registry key to set the DefaultLicenseServer. When we
moved the LS to a 2003 machine the 2000 TS were still pointing to the old LS.

Also, the Microsoft Clearinghouse seemed to have no problem switching the
per user licsenses to per device and we don't have SA.
