Is it possible to License XPe after you create the Target Image?
Meaning after I go through the First Boot Agent, can I register it
from within the XPe OS? Or must I enter the the number before I
create the Target Image?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Wayne,

No, it is not possible. (Or at least it would not be legal).

You must do this from Target Designer.

Reading over my initial question, it looked like I was asking about
Licensing the actual XP embedded designer.....

Well, what I am doing is adding software to the build that I have
created. I wanted to create a Ghost image of this, then License each
image that I build. So it isn't possible to license the build after
you create it?

If not, is it possible to add the software in target designer?

You can use same image with same product number for as many devices as you
like if you provide them with COA.
So you can use ghost to clone your XPe image, and all devices will use same
number, this is perfectly ok.
But if you need devices to participate on network then you will need to use
cloning support in your image, to reseal your image on every device.

You can and probably should in most cases add software from target designer.

Wayne,

You may use one PID your got from your distributor for all of your devices
covered by the particular license you purchased.
Use PID in TD settings and include "System Cloning Tool" to generated unique
characteristics (SIDs, Computer names, etc.) for all your cloned devices.
Check XPe docs on more info for "System Cloning Tool". If you manually
reseal, you can even manually install your application(s) before cloning the
image.

However, I'd love to hear from other folks who tried to do that - if it is
possible to change PID at runtime?
I don't see legal problems with it (unless I sell evaluation devices) but
only technical ones.
Changing RunTimePID entry in WERUNTIME.INI and a few registry entries in
System hive (3 or 4) did not seem to switch the runtime to non-evaluation.
Has anybody found the trick?

Hmm.. Running through FBA again is not an option for me. Instead I could
even build and deploy a new image with PID in it - almost the same time.
I was more thinking of having a way to "license" the post-FBA image. That is
nothing more than just one more interesting puzzle on XPe :-)

Thanks for your input anyway.
