My sister has four computers that she is planning to upgrade to Vista
and Office 2007 (they're all compatible). She'd like to know the most
economical route to get the software. She could go to Amazon.com and
spend $$$$, or she could go to the M$ volume licensing, or what else?
Any suggestions? (I've suggested Linux and OpenOffice. She'd adamant
on M$.)

Volume Licensing requires a minimum purchase of five (5) licenses.
Better off purchasing conventional retail upgrade versions of Vista and
Office 2007.

I Personally would go the MS route, I believe with licensing you have to a
minimum of 5 computers, are any of the computers laptops ? as the Office FPP
licence allows you to install on a Desktop PC and a laptop.

I'd buy ONE to be sure documents were compatible and looked right as needed.
For the other machines either OO or 602software. They are also giving away
Wordperfect suite at eBay.

Last time I paid attention to Volume Licensing (5 years ago), it
required that you buy 5 licenses of M$ products. Any five products.
Five copies of Windows was just as valid as two Windows plus two
Office plus one MapPoint. I suppose that I need to ask the M$ Volume
Licensing web site and ask what it would cost.

Unfortunately the constraint that I've been given is that it WILL be
Microsoft! Whatever. It's her money, not mine. I'll just try to find
the best deal. Office S&T will probably be a good buy to cover three
of the computers (assuming that M$ has that edition for Office 2007
with the same number of installs).

Sounds dumb but are you certain these computers meet the requirements for
Vista and even if they do since volume license is not practical I'd buy one
copy of the OS and see how well the install goes.

Very good point.

Good comment. All the computers are Dell's less than 2 years old and
the MS Vista Upgrade Advisor claims that they are good to go. I
suppose that I could contact the MS volume licensing folks and see
what they say that it would cost. Bouncing across the M$ web site
estimates a cost of something like $1700 per year (and yes, they do
have a 5 computer minimum). Depending on whether I get the full
versions of the applications or upgrade, the Amazon.com price ranges
from $700 (upgrade and Office S&T pricing) to $2100 for the full
versions (my sisters preferred choice - I don't know why she doesn't
like upgrade version). This is a one time charge rather than the M$
annual fee. I think that I'll recommend that route.

Thank you for the comments and suggestions.

Watch out, don't know what the Vista upgrade version (during the install)
will ask for/require as proof.
XP wants you to insert your CD from the previous version of Windows if you
are doing a clean install.
That means that you will be relying on the having a Dell OEM CD and the big
question; will it work???
Maybe someone else can answer this.
