I just purchased Windows 2000 Pro and want to use it in the office. I
have 3 client machines working off one server. I have heard I can buy
licenses for the other machines w/o having to buy new software. Is this
true? AND how many licenses would I need?
Thanks
Assuming you already have the appropriate server CAL's for your current
config, you only need to buy 2 more W2K licenses. No media necessary.
However, keep in mind that most of the cost of MS software is for the
license; the media cost is minimal, so you probably won't save much
unless you get into some sort of volume license agreement.
BTW, you do NOT need a different product key for each installation, only
a valid license for each installation. You can use the same product key
over and over again until you turn blue in the face.
One other consideration, if your server is W2K and it's running Terminal
Services in application server mode and your current workstations are
9x, you won't need TS CAL's anymore since W2K comes w/ W2K TS CAL's
built in.
