Hello, I've had this computer for 5 years but recenyly I had to replace the
hard drive. I'm attempting to use "WORD" for the first time since and it will
not accept my product license code. What can I do about? Thank you very much.

Microsoft Word is *not* a native component of Windows XP.

You need to enter the proper product code for Microsoft Word - should be on
your Microsoft Office/Microsoft Word CD case. The sticker on your computer
is not likely for Word/Office.

Are you entering the product key shown on the sticker that came on the
Office packaging or the sticker? Did you make sure you entered the
correct characters (for example, entering 5 instead of S and zero
instead of oh)? Are you using the install media that matches with the
product key, or did you just, ahem, dig up an install CD or .iso image
somewhere for Word or Office?

Yes, I did that. That's the reason for the question. I entered the proper
code but it rufused to except it. I've had this happen before when I had to
reinstall the Operating System from scratch. Some one gave me a way to do it
but unfortunately I did not keep it thinking it would not happen again. Silly
me. I've got the correct code. It just doesn't recognisr it as being correct.
Thanks anyway. James

Hi:

You did not by any chance have Belarc Advisor previously installed and
saved a copy of it when you ran it. If so, you would have a copy of the MS
Word License Code in this file.

I recommend that everyone download and install Belarc Advisor
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html. I run it after most application
and Windows Updates and save a file of it. Also about every 6 months I print
a copy of this file just for reference purposes etc.

Just a guess, but there's a good chance that you are entering the
product code for Windows, not that for Word. Where are you finding
this product code?

Mr. Blake It's the one on thhe back of the blue box that the programs came
in. It's the only product code that I know of. Thanks James

Mr. Blake

No formality is necessary. You can just call me "Ken."

You say "programs," but I'll make my point again and ask the question
again.

There's a good chance that you are entering the product key for
Windows, not that for Word. What "programs" do you mean that came in
this box? Word has one product key and Windows another one. They do
not use the same key and if the key works for one of them, it won't
work for the other.

You can find the Windows Product key with any of these:

ViewKeyXP www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/ViewKeyXP.exe (for Retail versions
only, and for pre-SP2 versions only)

ProduKey http://nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

AIDA32 http://www.aumha.org/freeware.htm

Everest http://www.lavalys.com/index.php?page=product&view=1

Magical Jellybean www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

Belarc Advisor www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Find it and compare it with the one you are trying to enter. If they
are the same, my guess is correct, and you are entering the wrong key.

"that the programs came in" seems to imply multiple? One one program
comes in one box. Office is one, Windows in another. Did you get
the Office box? I always thought office came in Orange or yellow boxes.

My box is labled "Works Suite 2003". In the box I got "works suite 2003
setup, works, woord work cliparts, encarta encyclopedia, Money,
Streets, andPicture it. On the box there is only one product key and it has
worked for me in the past. With all the new downloads I've been getting
lately something must have changed. I was not aware I could get it on line.
With the key I have I have used words and works successfully in the past.
Things keep changing and I'm an old man and just can't keep up. I'll go to
the web sites. Thank you very much for your help. James

In that case, please disregard my last post! I was wrong; I thought you
were describing a Windows XP box.

My guess is that you are not entering the key carefully enough. Be very
careful, making sure you can tell the difference between 5 and S, 8 and
B, etc. Also, you can't enter the letters as lowecase; they must all be
capital.

Are you using a retail package of Office? Or is it coming off an image
or recovery CD for your particular make and model? I've seen where the
pre-installed software in an image doesn't match with the sticker they
give you (because the sticker is for some OEM version and not the custom
version embedded in the image or recovery data).

You might have to make a toll-free call to Microsoft to have them give
you a new key. You should be able to read them the old key (they'll
probably ask for it). You could start here:

james w. morgan,
1. Did you install XP from scratch on the new HDD, or did you use a backup
from a program like Acronis or Norton Ghost?
2. Did the PC manufacturer's Install Disks, or reinstall partition, come
with a trial version of MS Office XP or MS Office 2003?
3. Did you install MS Office 2003, or any version of MS Office, on your PC,
then you do not need to install MS Word component, from the MS Works Suite.
4. Remember the Product Key in MS Works Suite, is to activate MS Word
component in the Suite package. Without MS Word component, you should be
able to intall the other programs, Money, Encarta, etc... from the Works
installer on CD1, or using the Setup.exe file for each program, found on the
individual CDs, and not use the Product Key, that came with the software.

Look closely at the packaging, especially if the CDs came in paper sleeves
instead of a Jewel case. Make sure your Entering the ID code for MS Works,
not the trial version of MS Office, that some PC manufactures' offer. You
may need to uninstall the trial version of Office from your PC, first.

My Dell PCs (Dimension 4600 & Inspiron 1100) came with 5 CDs, for MS Works
Suites 2003 and 2004, respectively. You need to install the MS Works Task
Manager and MS Word from CD1 first. Try doing a custom install of just MS
Works Task Manager, first. Then install MS Word 2003, that is part of the
Suite package. Reboot PC. Then open MS Word from the program panel, you
should get the Window pop up, to enter the Product Key, that is on the Jewel
Case for MS Works Suite.

If you are comfortable editing the Registry, using Start button> Run> Type:
REGEDIT:
Check the registry, make sure that you have only one entry for the following
Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Registration\{Long ID
Name}\

After exporting the following Key to your Desktop as a precaution. You can
try deleting the following Key/Dword:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Registration\{Long ID
Name}\ProductID

Then Reboot PC, try opening Word, the activation window should now pop up,
and you can enter the Product Key from the sticker on the Works Suite's
Jewel case or paper CD sleeve.

On the Works sets with Word that I have installed, there's the key for
Works, and the Word sleeve has a separate key on it.

The two keys are separate and are not interchangeable.
