Hi, i have a custom tower thats running Windows XP SP2 home. Anyway i
recently purchased a Macbook Pro already knowing that i was going to run boot
camp and have it dual boot with windows XP. However after spending $3,000 on
a computer id like to not go out and have to buy another copy of windows. I
am aware that some companies allow people to put one copy of the program on a
desktop and on a laptop. I am not sure if windows is this way, or if i can
have it so that both computers cant be on windows at the same time. Please
help because i have a computer science class i have to take the laptop to
that uses windows. thanks!

One licence per computer

Each install of win* requires a seperate Licence, various Office apps allow
installation on multiple PC's for same user or in some instances family
members.
If you are a student you qualify for Academic pricing, and / or your
institution may have special licencing arrangements.

Ok, Is another option to go ahead and install it on the laptop anyway? and
then just not have them on at the same time? or can i buy another licence for
windows, cheaper than buying a new disk.

Youe second install will probably fail the authentication process.

Take a look at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/addlic.mspx

also investigate what your Institution has to offer, they may have an
agreement with Microsoft for a cheaper student purchase

If it's a retail license, you may install it on the laptop, provided you
also remove it from the tower. And you can even reinstall it on the
tower if you wish at a later date, provided you remove it from the
laptop. "One license per computer (at a time)."

You could always purchase a cheaper OEM disk (or an upgrade disk if you
also have a qualifying disk to upgrade it from, such as Win 98 or Win
ME). But OEM installations/licenses are tied to the first (and only) PC
on which they are installed for all perpetuity (there might even be
something about your first born -- read the EULA).

No, Windows licenses don't work this way and never have. You need a
separate OS license for each system.

It's normally Office software that is licensed the way you describe.

That's not really an option because Windows installs need activation, and
any OEM or Retail version will fail activation if installed on two systems.
or can i buy another licence for
windows,

You can do that, but, it isn't really much...
cheaper than buying a new disk.

The savings is not much. The price of an XP package is overwhelmingly the
license, not the CD or packaging. It's better, for a number of reasons,
to get the extra CD and license key.

A few points:

1) Laptop XP version is more likely an OEM version which may come with
a Recovery CD / partition. This version may be "tweaked" to only work
with the laptop.

2) Microosft has never allows "us" to every install the same Windows
onto two different PCs. Now starting with XP, they have a methos of
"enforcing" this restriction.

3) Boot Camp may require a retail software version or a generic
"unbranded" version of XP.
